Earliest Bicycle: Drais Simple Invention
The origins of the bicycle date back to the early 19th century, with the first iterations resembling a wooden frame with two wheels aligned in a row. One of the earliest documented designs was created by Baron Karl Drais, a German inventor, in 1817. Known as the ‘Draisine’ or ‘Running Machine,’ his invention consisted of a simple wooden frame, handlebars, and a saddle. Riders propelled themselves by walking or running with their feet on the ground.
1861: French blacksmith invents modern bicycle
However, the first recognizable bicycle as we know it today was invented in 1861. The French blacksmith Pierre Michaux developed a bicycle with pedals attached to the front wheel. This new design allowed riders to propel themselves forward by rotating the pedals with their feet. Known as the ‘Michaux Velocipede,’ it became popular and laid the foundation for future bicycle models.
