How To Fix Bicycle Brakes
Must-Have Skill: Fix Your Bike Brakes
Fixing bicycle brakes is an essential skill that every cyclist should acquire. When your brakes are not functioning properly, it can compromise your safety and make your riding experience less enjoyable. Thankfully, fixing bicycle brakes is a relatively simple task that can be done at home with a few basic tools.
Inspect and Replace Worn Brake Pads
To start, inspect the brake pads for any signs of wear. Over time, brake pads can become worn down and lose their effectiveness. If they appear too thin or unevenly worn, it’s time to replace them. Remove the wheel and brake pad from the brake caliper, and replace the old pads with new ones. Make sure they are aligned properly and tightened securely.
Adjust Brake Caliper for Better Performance
The next step is to adjust the brake caliper. If your brakes are not engaging properly or feel loose, they may need adjustment. Use a 5mm Allen wrench to loosen the mounting bolts that attach the brake caliper to the frame or fork. Squeeze the brake lever and adjust the caliper until the brake pads are centered over the rim, then tighten the mounting bolts.
Improving Brake Responsiveness with Cable Tension
Another important aspect to check is the brake cable tension. If your brake levers feel loose or have excessive play, adjusting the cable tension can help improve their responsiveness. Locate the barrel adjuster on the brake lever or the brake caliper and turn it clockwise to tighten the cable or counter-clockwise to loosen it. Repeat this adjustment until your brake levers engage smoothly and have a firm feel.
