How To Change A Bicycle Tire

Master the art of changing bicycle tires

Changing a bicycle tire might seem like a daunting task, but with a little practice, it can become a relatively straightforward process. To start, you’ll need a few tools: tire levers, a spare tube, a pump, and a wrench. First, flip the bike upside down or use a bicycle stand so the wheels can spin freely. Use the wrench to loosen the nuts holding the wheel in place, and then remove the wheel from the frame.

Remove damaged tire and tube

Next, use the tire levers to remove the damaged tire. Insert one lever under the edge of the tire and hook it onto a spoke. Insert a second lever about four inches away and use it to pry the tire off the rim. Repeat this process until one side of the tire is free from the rim. Carefully remove the tube from inside the tire.

Inspect, remove debris, insert new tube

After removing the old tube, inspect the inside of the tire for any debris that may have caused the flat. Remove any sharp objects from the tire before proceeding. Then, insert the new tube into the tire, starting with the valve stem. Align the tube so it sits evenly inside the tire, and make sure it is not twisted.

Once the tube is in place, use the tire levers to carefully work the tire back onto the rim, starting opposite the valve stem. Be cautious not to pinch the tube as you do this. Once the tire is back in place, use your hands to push the tire onto the rim evenly, ensuring it is properly seated. Finally, inflate the tire using a pump, periodically checking the pressure to avoid overinflating it.
