On a flat road, an average rider can reach speeds of around 15 to 20 miles per hour (24 to 32 kilometers per hour) with relative ease. With better training, experienced cyclists can maintain speeds between 20 to 25 miles per hour (32 to 40 kilometers per hour) for extended periods. In professional racing, cyclists can reach incredible speeds, sometimes exceeding 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour) in sprints.

Extreme conditions push bicycle speeds

However, bicycle speeds can go much higher depending on certain conditions. For instance, when descending a steep hill, a cyclist can easily exceed speeds of 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour).
