Bicycle Makes Clicking Noise When Pedaling

Common Clicking Noise in Bicycles Explained

If you’ve ever experienced your bicycle making a clicking noise while pedaling, you’re not alone. This issue is quite common among cyclists and can be caused by various factors. One possible reason for the clicking noise is a misalignment of the chain. Over time, the chain may become stretched or worn out, causing it to not properly engage with the gears, resulting in a clicking sound.

Loose Pedal? Check and Tighten

Another potential culprit for the clicking noise could be a loose pedal. Pedals can become loose due to regular use, especially if they haven’t been properly tightened. When your foot presses down on a loose pedal, it can create a clicking sound as it moves slightly out of place. Inspecting and tightening the pedals might solve the issue.

Fix clicking noise with freewheel maintenance

A stuck or malfunctioning freewheel or freehub can also contribute to the clicking noise. The freewheel or freehub is responsible for allowing the bike to coast without the pedals moving. If this mechanism becomes compromised, it may cause a clicking sound as you pedal. Lubricating or replacing the freewheel or freehub assembly might be necessary to resolve the issue.

Worn-out bottom bracket causes clicking

Lastly, the clicking noise might be caused by a worn-out bottom bracket. The bottom bracket is the part of the bike that houses the crankset and pedals. Over time, the bearings in the bottom bracket can wear out or become dry, leading to a clicking sound when you pedal. Replacing the bottom bracket assembly should eliminate the clicking noise and restore smooth pedaling.
